Weekend Update

30/01/2006

Saturday morning started off with the first kids photoshoot we’ve ever done at my work. She wasn’t in the photo shoot, but is is quite possibly the cutest little girl ever:

All you had to do was smile at her and she’d start cracking up. I hope my kids are like that.

Then, of course, our usual Saturday night date at Sushi on the Rock occured (Hey Jeremy!!). This is how much Kelly and I go to Sushi on the Rock: our waiter is now my friend on myspace. Tragic? Yes. Yes, it is.

Saturday was also Damon’s birthday. Kelly had to go get Ty(rone), so I went downtown and took Damon to Extraordinary Desserts.

I got the Caribe.

Damon got the Lemon Ricotta Torte.

Mine was so much better.

There was this little kid that kept running around hte restaurant in circles, and everytime he passed our table, he’d stop and look at us like he’d never seen black people before.

I see black people

We named him Billy. Still don’t know his name, but he gave Damon a couple high-fives. Big ups to Josh for keeping us entertained while we were there. Happy birthday, D! Thanks for giving me my Rent CD’s back – I’m waiting for my rendition of “Seasons of Brunch”.

Feelin’ oh so silky smooooth..

25/01/2006

I can’t stop watching this, and I know you won’t be able to, either.

And so you can sing along in your head…

Just let your SoulGlo
Just let it shine through
Just let your SoulGlo, baby
Feeling oh so silky smooth
Just let it shine through
Just let your SoulGlo
SoulGlo

Really… is Jheri Curl Juice gonna make you feel “oh so silky smooth”? I thought it was more along the lines of “oh so juicy greeezy”. Hey Krissi, you had a Jheri Curl… what it silky smooove? bwahahahaha. Don’t make me scan that picture in. I’ll do it.

Any hairstyle that requires an “activator” is a no-no on my list, but that’s just me.

Get Involved

23/01/2006

Last night Stephanie and I went to the HOB to see Raphael Saadiq. Steph wasn’t too familiar with his music, but I promised her it was good shit regardless.

Raphael Saadiq

Those of you that know me know I would go to a show at the HOB every night if I could. Whoever I force to go with me (sorry Steph, Mario, Kelly and Damon), we usually eat there because you get the “Pass the Line” privilege and enter the music hall 15 minutes before people who didn’t eat at the restaurant. So, of course, Stephanie and I eat there. There’s some private party there, so all of the tables at the bar were taken and the main seating in the restaurant was closed off. We finally found a table that wasn’t reserved and we sat down. Apparently, we were supposed to be seated by the hostess, but the waiter was real cool and didn’t make us get up. I didn’t want anything too heavy, so I got the catfish nuggets with the sweet potato french fries. Well, okay, I guess that’s heavy. Shut up. It was an appetizer though! Stephanie looks at those little special menus they put on the tables when they wanna feature something and sees the Triple Chocolate Mousse Cake. I think as soon as she saw it, she decided. So, she got a side of cornbread and a slice of cake for dinner. Mmm mmm, bitches.

I have absolutely no problem going to a show by myself. Usually, whether I’m by myself or not, I try to get to know the people that are standing around me. I figure we’re gonna be bumping into each other all night, but as well make it friendly and get rid of the need to apologize each time. So we’re waiting to get into the music hall and a girl taps me on the shoulder and says “Weren’t you at the Kindred show?” And I say “Oh! Hey girl! How are you!?” Yes, I go there that much. We chat and whatnot, get into the music hall, and they’re playing India Arie’s first CD. That’s cool, it’s a good CD. Then it starts skipping… and they start the CD over again. I know you’re not the average girl in the video, and I know you like brown skin. Cool. But can we change up this damn CD?

The opening act comes on. I still don’t know her name Her name is Havana and she could sing. She sort of sounded like the girl from SWV or 702. She did a few songs and it was all good. She’s local from Diego, too. When her set was done and she got off stage, again, the India Arie CD started up. At this point everyone around me is like “Really? They’re really playing this again? It’s the HOUSE OF BLUES and they got one CD back there? I knew I shoulda brought my iPod”. Needless to say, I won’t be listening to India for a while. I look over and see another person I met at the Mos Def and Kindred shows (what up, Oscar!!). He was falling asleep, and I told him not to fall over. What are the chances of seeing the same people at 3 different shows? He’s like my concert stranger buddy.

Raphael Saadiq

About an hour later, Raphael finally came out and rocked it. He did some Tony Toni Toné, a whole bunch of Lucy Pearl, and a medley of all of his slow jams. His backup singers were off the chain (but half of them had their wigs on crooked).

Raphael Saadiq

It was the first show of their tour, and if I could go to the shows up in LA I definitely would, since he said his brother and cousin would be there (I guess that’s Toni and Toné). It was a good show. If you’re up in LA try to catch it.

The Friday Four #11 – Hygiene Edition

20/01/2006

Happy Friday, January 20th everyone! Today’s Friday Four came to me in the shower. No deep thinking on this one, lovelies. I just wanna know how you smell in the morning. :)

1. What kind of shampoo do you use?
2. What kind of soap?
3. Lotion – all over or just the spots that are visible?
4. What’s your favorite cologne and perfume?

As a girl who has enough body splash and scented lotions un-ash-ify half of black america, I’d love to know how the rest of you smell. :) Answer in the comments and happy friday!

Raw Fish

19/01/2006

Lately, I’ve been craving ahi sashimi like it’s nobody’s business. Sashimi, however (as all my sushi eaters know) is an expensive habit. It is, essentially, a cocaine habit in fish form. I recently found out that Whole Foods has a very nice sushi/sashimi collection. It’s not your every day supermarket sushi collection of philadelphia rolls and krab stuff. So, I made a trip last night and got almost a pound of sushi grade ahi. It came to about $20, for what would be about $40 worth of ahi at any decent sushi bar or japanese restaurant. Me and Moms cut it up last night and had us some at-home sashimi! It was great, and much cheaper. I could eat tuna/yellowtail/salmon sashimi every night!

I know not all of my loyal reader(s) eat sushi. It was either Josephine or Rommel that first got me into sushi. I think I gagged the first time I had a California roll. That’s what everyone starts with, right? The first time I had wasabi, I was told it was like japanese guacamole. Big mistake. After I stopped crying and my nose hairs grew back, I began to like it again.

Now I can’t even contemplate not having sushi or sashimi. Mmm mmm, bitches!! I know we just turned Krissi on to sashimi. As long as she thinks it’s seared, she’ll eat it (it’s still sashimi, girl). So, what was your first sushi experience? Do you even like sushi? How far will you go? Are you still at cooked stuff like California Rolls or are you the crazy one doing quail egg shooters at the bar with the sushi chef? Answer in the comments. <3

minor update: check out this moment’s anthem in the upper right. i finally changed it.

This Explains A Lot…

17/01/2006

All of my favorites… gone.

Just the other day, Manny and I were talking about how much we miss all of those Mexican candies from our childhood. Now it’s full of lead. Son of a…

I figured that the little white kids got their lead poisoning from eating paint chips, the brown kids got theirs from eating Lucas Limón.

Sour Cream Ice Cream

10/01/2006

I’ve finally started using my camera phone on a more regular basis. Here’s the most fantastic picture I’ve taken thus far:

Sour Cream Ice Cream

I know it seems odd, but this is a bowl if Sour Cream ice cream from ED. Everytime I mention it to someone they make this sort of sour look on their face like “you must be out of your damn mind”. But I’m 4/4 with people trying it and loving it! It is, in fact, the best thing ever.

So, all you local ‘Diegans, go to your nearest ED and try the Sour Cream ice cream. They don’t make it every day. Hopefully you go on a day when they have it. If they don’t have Sour Cream, get the Salted Caramel or the Earl Grey. Or any flavor, for that matter. It’s good shit.
